Why We Walk

in Memory of Andy Sears

Home City: Larchmont, NY

On November 8, 2002, Carole and Andy Sears were driving north on I 95 in Georgia. A drunk driver speeding in the southbound lane lost control of his car, sped across the center divide and crashed headlong into them. Andy's injuries were catastrophic. He died in the hospital several hours later while Carole was in surgery. Carole attended Andy's funeral by ambulance on a stretcher and it would be seven months and ten surgeries before she was able to walk again.

Andy Sears was a man who really cared about people. His family came first; he was always there for Carole and their children and his friends loved him dearly. He was an interesting, fun-loving, thoughtful person who worked tirelessly as a lawyer for the civil rights of others. In his memory, his family and friends have set up a scholarship at his beloved university, Princeton. It is given each year to a student who is active in the cause of civil rights. It is, then, most ironic that Andy's most basic civil right, his right to live, was taken from him by a drunk driver.

Carole has since been tireless in her efforts working with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. She serves as the MADD Westchester Chapter President and Lower Hudson Valley Walk Like MADD Chair. The Sears family looks for your support of Walk Like MADD.
