Why We Walk

RUTH MCCARTHY

Crash Anniversary: October 13, 2000

On October 13, 2000, Ruth McCarthy was on her way home from dinner with her husband, John, when a drunk driver drove his SUV into their car and split it in half. Ruth was killed instantly and John was critically injured.  Ruth and John were a few days away from celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary when the McCarthy family ended up planning her funeral instead.

Ruth was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. However, some of her grandchildren never had the chance to meet “Nanny" McCarthy who was so adored by everyone around her.

While the loss of Ruth still aches the hearts of the McCarthy family, they have decided to use the crash and its consequences as an opportunity to educate younger generations about the high cost of making poor decisions.  Her family has been involved with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Connecticut ever since the crash and have spent many years walking in her memory.

Please join Ruth's family in helping MADD create a future where there are No More Victims of this 100% preventable crime.
