Crash Anniversary: October 25, 1997

Cary Candella was killed on October 25, 1997 at age 34 while driving to work. Cary left behind his mother, two brothers, a sister, sister in law, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and countless friends and extended family. Cary lived his life to the fullest and a drunk driver cut his life short and devastated all who loved him.

Cary was driving while at work on an early Saturday morning. Sunday he was planning on enjoying a fishing trip to Montauk. Cary was involved in a small fender bender on the Verrazzano Bridge. While he was inspecting the damage and exchanging information with the other driver, a drunk driver returning from a club mowed him down. Cary died on the bridge that early morning.

A real family man, Cary never got to have his own family. He was never able to get married and missed out on so many things. His family tries to keep his memory alive. Cary's niece Jacqueline helped organize the first Staten Island Walk Like MADD in 2014. They are hoping that this year's walk will continue to bring awareness to many, and hopefully save some lives and help other victims of this senseless crime. Think before you drink!! It's a matter of life or death.
