Why We Participate

Chadrick davis & davita abrams

Home City: Wingdale, NY

Crash Anniversary: August 26, 2004

A trip to the grocery story tragically altered our lives.

Me, my son Chadrick and daughter Davita were on our way back from the grocery store heading home when a box truck hit us head on. My son’s last words were, “Mom! Look out!” and everything went black.

Chadrick and Davita were killed on that day by a person driving under the influence.

I was lost for a long time struggling with the loss of two of my children. I remember a cousin of mine in Milwaukee asking me why I was always happy. I now understand the full meaning of Smokey Robinson’s song “Tears of a Clown.” My husband helped me through those times so much and of course my immediate family which includes Dover High School in Dutchess County.

I did not want my children’s deaths to go in vain and I was so very upset with the driver. MADD reached out to me for support and they helped me be a voice that matters for both MADD and my children.

I became a Certified Advocate for MADD and started speaking at the VIP in Westchester County. I escorted families to court, spoke at schools and had one on one phone conversation with victims who lost a loved one, no matter what time it was. I will advocate for MADD until everyone stops drinking and driving.

“The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes and prevent underage drinking.”

Please support our mission because life should not be taken away because of irresponsible people.  My life is important, your life is important and my children and all the other victims’ lives WERE important. We are the Voice for the HERE now and WERE that are no longer with us. Please choose to help save lives by supporting MADD in the following ways:

  • Participate in Walk Like MADD
  • Donate to MADD
  • Volunteer for MADD

 Thank you,

 Shelia Abrams
