Kaitlin writes: As most of you know, I was hit by a drunk driver nearly four years ago. The accident caused injuries to my hip, cervical spine, and lumbar spine, all of which required surgery. The impact gave me a concussion, which later turned into post-concussion syndrome accompanied by dizziness, a constant severe headache, and extreme difficulty concentrating (not so fun for a Ph.D. student!). I have also battled with PTSD and all of the symptoms that come along with it since that day. Despite all of that, I am finally in a good place in my recovery and want to do something to fight back against drunk driving.

To celebrate the 4th anniversary of the accident and the progress I have made in my recovery since then, I am putting together a team to participate in the Walk Like MADD 5k with me. After 5 surgeries, I am finally feeling well enough physically to participate in this type of event. I recognize, however, that many victims of drunk driving are not nearly as lucky as me. I want to turn my years of anger, frustration, and pain into power and raise money that will help put an end to drunk driving and make sure that no one else ever has to experience the pain that I have endured for the past four years (or worse). Fighting this problem on a larger scale will also help me to heal my emotional wounds.

Please join me in walking to put an end to this 100% preventable crime! So many of you have supported me through my surgeries over the past few years. My goal is to get a big group of family and friends to stand beside me and celebrate this milestone in my recovery and to show the world that there are lots of people who are fighting back!

The event will take place on Saturday, October 14th in Williamsport, PA. If you are unable to join us that day, you can still show your support for the cause by becoming a “virtual walker”. This will allow you to donate to the team and create your own fundraising page to help us raise money. We will be having t-shirts made for all of the walkers joining us in Williamsport. If you would just like to donate, you can click the “support us now” button on the team page. To register for our team, register as a virtual walker, or make a donation, click the link to our team page below.

I rarely ask for donations for things, but this cause is obviously very near and dear to my heart, and I am extremely passionate about putting an end to drunk driving. Please consider donating to this effort—no matter how small, your contribution could save a life!

Please join Kaitlin in helping MADD create a future where there are
