Why We Walk
Crash Anniversary: January 1, 2014
Rafael Gonzalez III was born on October 29, 1992 in Brooklyn New York, his mother’s only son. He grew up with 3 sisters and was very shy and quite, taking in everything that was going on around him. After looking in the wrong places for brotherly love, Rafael decided to change his life. He got his GED and enrolled in criminal justices classes at the local community college. He wanted to become a Law Enforcement Officer and work for the State Troopers. While going to college Rafael volunteered at an awareness program for youth who had been involved with alcohol and drugs. On December 31, 2013 Rafael told his mother goodnight and she never dreamed that would be the last time she would ever see her baby boy’s smiling face. At 5:00 am on January 1, 2014 with a knock on the door the lives of Rafael’s family changed forever. They were told by authorities that Rafael had been killed in a drunk driving crash. With a BAC of .19 the driver was twice the legal limit. The awareness program with which Rafael was volunteering created the “Rafael Gonzalez III Motivation to Success Scholarship” to honor his memory. Rafael had a big heart, he loved life, his family and he loved to laugh. He has left an imprint on the hearts of all those who knew him. No words can describe how much he is loved and missed. We look forward to the day we will see him again.
