WHY WE WALK

MADDIE KRUSE

Crash Anniversary: May 31, 2015

It was a special Sunday morning as a grandma was driving her grandchild and four other friends from Tennessee to Florida for a birthday beach party. That Sunday, May 31, 2015 turned out to be anything but special. At around 6:30 am in the morning they were just south of Memphis, TN when they were rear ended by a man traveling at a high rate of speed. This collision killed Maddie Kruse and her friend Rachel Lynch. Maddie was 16 and Rachel 17 at the time. They were both entering their senior year of high school. The driver had a BAC of .14, which is almost double the legal limit. He had six prior DUI’s in the state of Mississippi, but each offense was processed at a first offense. The crash that killed Maddie and her friend Rachel would be his 7th DUI.

We work with MADD to share Maddie’s story and remind the public that drinking and driving should not mix. Walk Like MADD is MADD's signature fundraising event to help us raise both awareness and funds to end drunk driving and fight drugged driving. With every step taken and each dollar raised, walkers are supporting MADD’s lifesaving mission to keep our families and communities safe.
