 Why We Walk

Joel Eggers

Home City: Boise, ID

Crash Anniversary: April 8, 2016

For Joel…

Joel was a family man who loved his family like no other.  He married his high school sweetheart Rose, and they were married for 43 plus years. Together with his wife, they raised a son, Shawn and a daughter, Jennifer. He was most proud of his 6 grandkids. He spent countless hours watching his grandsons play hockey and his granddaughters play soccer.  He was referred to as “Papa” not only by his grandkids but to the youth sporting community. Joel was not only a staple in the sporting community, but he also was a loyal employee at Trimco Mill works for over 25 years and at his second job Firebird Raceway for over 28 years.  He had the most beautiful blue eyes and an amazing chuckle.  He truly had an amazing impact on those who he met.

Joel was looking forward to his retirement where he would enjoy fishing, riding his ATV, geocaching and spending weekends with his wife, kids & grandkids camping.  Tragically all those plans came to an end on April 8, 2016 when Joel was out on his afternoon walk.  A 24-year-old man who was high on methamphetamine crossed 2 lanes of traffic striking and killing Joel instantly.  One person’s selfish act ripped our lives into shreds leaving a permanent hole in our hearts.

As his daughter, I have found a new passion.  Together with my mom and daughters we fight to raise awareness to the consequences of impaired driving. We fight in Joel’s honor and we fight so that nobody else must endure this excruciating pain that we live with every day.

His family and friends will be honoring his memory by participating in the Idaho state Walk Like MADD virtual event.  We look forward to a future with NO MORE VICTIMS!
