Why We Walk

Dad

GARRETT HOFF

Home City: El Paso, Texas

Crash Anniversary: August 20, 2014

On August 20, 2014, a drunk driver was driving a black Dodge Ram 3500 pickup West on 1-10 in East El Paso, TX around 9:15 p.m.  The traffic had come to a halt on I-10 in a construction zone.  A drunk driver was driving at a high rate of speed on the right lane when he rear-ended an Acura Integra driven by, Garett Hoff.  The collision forced Garrett’s vehicle into the left lane causing it to hit the rear of a Mercury Sable with two passengers that caused the Sable to collide with a 14 wheeler tractor trailer.  The 14-wheeler tractor trailer was stopped due to heavy traffic in the construction zone.  Garett and the passenger of the Mercury Sable, Virginia Acosta were killed instantly.  Virginia’s daughter who was pregnant at the time was injured; she and her child survived the crash.  Garret was only 29 years of age.

Garrett’s father, Gary, volunteers with MADD and participate in the Walk Like MADD committee, testified at MADD legislative day and speaks at the MADD VIP and in the community in memory of his son.

We walk for Gary.

Sometimes I catch a glimpse

In a wave of smoke

My Son, My Heart

When I see what you like to do

I can’t help but think of you

Sometimes I feel the heat of an engine

A feeling of the night air

A collection of each memory

And every day wishing for more

Sometimes I ask for answers

Because each day I ask for you

I ask for faith and courage

And strength to get me by

Sometimes I ask for bravery

Because time can be slow

Sometime the road is hard to see

Sometimes I cry

This was not what I had planned

Why you suffered a Dad can’t understand

Sometimes I hear your laughter

And remember you at play

But my Son I will always miss you

Not Sometimes but every day,

Dad
